April 3 - 7, 2017 - Landscape Painting Workshop for Beginners - Florence, Italy

This is a workshop for those who want to learn the basics of landscape painting "en plein air" (outdoors). The aim of the workshop is to give you the knowledge, confidence, and inspiration to continue trying to capture nature. No previous painting experience is required. You can borrow equipment from me.

In the workshop, we will go through how you:

  • Prepare panels
  • Compose a painting
  • Set up your easel and palette
  • Use the sieve size method
  • Note light, color, and values
  • Abstract from nature (simplify)
  • Mix colors
  • Applying paint (different painting techniques)

I will demonstrate for the whole group. You will also receive personal instruction and can ask questions at your easel throughout the day.

Schedule

  • 09:00 – 12:00 Demo and/or individual painting
  • 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Lunch
  • 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Individual painting

You will work on one painting in the morning and one in the afternoon, and you can expect to complete between 4 and 6 paintings during the workshop.

Places

We will paint around the city center and places outside Florence (such as Fiesole and Settignano) that can be reached by bus.

Materials

Please bring your own brushes and paints. I am available to help you purchase what you need to get started. Easels and palettes are available to borrow during the workshop. I will also provide you with prepared panels, paper towels, medium, and solvents.

List of materials:

  • Easel and palette (available to borrow)
  • Palette knife and medium-sized cups
  • Pig hair brushes: 2 large, 2 medium, 2 small (flat or filbert)
  • Oil paints (40 ml tubes): titanium white, cadmium yellow, yellow ochre, cadmium red, alizarin red, cerulean blue (optional), ultramarine blue, ivory black, raw umber.
  • Black mirror (or smartphone)

Cost

The workshop costs €400 per participant. A non-refundable deposit of €100 must be paid to confirm your place. The remaining amount is payable at the beginning of the workshop. Your cost for materials (brushes and paints) will be approximately €100. A minimum of two participants is required for the workshop to take place. Five is the maximum number of participants.

My name is Niklas Elgmo and I will be your instructor. I am from Sweden and live in Florence. I graduated from the painting program at the Florence Academy of Art, where I now work and teach.
